2009 - Favorite Books

I read a lot of books or parts of books for my job months before they're released. Right now I'm reading April 2010 titles. Sometimes it's difficult for me to select books I've enjoyed for a specific year as there are so many. I decided to pick five titles that I read in 2009 and would read again today....maybe tomorrow I'd choose other titles... but I doubt it.

Mieville is a skilled writer and this mystery/ science fiction or science fiction/mystery novel....oh, who cares about the genre labels this is a highly enjoyable read.

The second novel by the uber popular and sadly deceased Stieg Larsson. Translated from Swedish

The cover description says it best. Sister Ping was an amazing Snakehead. Very enjoyable and be sure to check out the website too. Set in New York's Chinatown.

Another in the Simon Serrailler mystery series by Susan Hill. Hill is a beautiful writer and creates wonderful mysteries. Set in a small English city.

The first book in the Commissaire Adamsberg series is finally available in English. Delightfully quirky characters and a well plotted mystery...what a good read. Translated from French and Fred Vargas is a woman.

Hi sbk --

Interesting list -- one that's heavy on crime and fiction!

Re Fred Vargas' Commissaire Adamsberg book: Is the protagonist male or female? Also, do you know why the author goes by Fred?

Hi ytsl,

Fred Vargas is Frederique Audouin-Rouzeau a archaelogist and medieval historian. The Vargas comes from Ava Gardner's role in the Barefoot Contessa. Adamsberg is a male and a quirky on at that.
