End of Summer - Vermont

A day comes, usually in August, when the air and the quality of sunlight seem different. I think of this as the beginning of fall. Usually this day occurs mid August but this year it happened at the beginning of the month.  It's a subtle difference as the temperature is still within the warm summer range, the greens are still lush and activities such as spending the day at a local lake swimming and picnicking are popular.

I asked friends and coworkers if they noticed this and if so how to describe the changes that took place. "A muggy day seems clearer."  "The air is less dense and trees and buildings look sharper."  "The leaves are still green but look lighter in weight." "Driving in my car when it's 85 degrees there's a coolness in the air if you stick your arm out the window." Only one "What, are you nuts?"

Trees at a local golf course which I photograph every season.

                                                           A very tall tree stump.

Hi Sarah sbk --

Is it because the air gets drier?

Here in Hong Kong, fall doesn't really come until November -- which is why it seems more like summer during the mid-autumn festival than fall! ;b

Hi ytsl,

Thanks for the comment. I think the air does get drier and the leaves and grasses while still very green begin to dry out too.
